2022 Groundwork Wine Co. Cabernet Sauvignon
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Laura’s, Margot & Devi Vineyards. All three lots were hand harvested and trucked directly to the winery in half-ton bins and destemmed into closed top stainless steel tanks upon arrival. The fruit was allowed to begin a natural fermentation with native yeasts and given one pumpover per day until dry. Upon completion of fermentation, the fruit was gently pressed separating the juice from the skins. The pomace was collected and hauled offsite to be utilized as fertilizer and bio-fuel. The juice was sent to small, mostly neutral (only 7% new) French barriques to age for 18 months. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered on February 22, 2024 with minimal SO2. 14% alcohol.
Tasting Notes
One of the best values in elegant, classically styled California Cabernet we’ve ever tasted. Medium to full bodied, elegant and impeccably balanced, this isn’t too tannic or acidic to popm and pour today. It has tons of juiciness to its red and black berry fruit, accented by classic Cab notes of mint, olive and graphite. Easy to drink and great to pair with everyday red meat meals.
About Groundwork Wine Co.
Growing up in East Los Angeles, Curt was not a wine country kid raised among the vines. He got a glimpse of the wine world when coming to the central coast at the age of 20. He became enamored with winemaking and jumped right in. His wine label Sans Liege or “without allegiance” aptly describes his tenacity to pursue winemaking on the central coast unhindered by the trappings of any particular style. He is excited to have the opportunity to be a part of a winemaking region which is still shaping its history. For Sans Liege he focuses on Rhone varietals (especially Grenache) and favors character over notoriety when choosing vineyards for in diversity lies the promise of uncommon opportunity. He also crafts his foundational wines, Groundwork Wine Co. which are pure varietal expressions at an everyday price point.
